What goes in before the boards
Most floors that fail did not fail at the surface. They failed underneath, before anything was nailed down.

Moisture read on both sides
The subfloor and the wood both get metered, and the gap between the two numbers decides whether anything gets laid that week. In Oklahoma that gap moves a long way between July and January.

Subfloor flattened
High spots ground down, low spots filled. A floor that rocks underfoot in year two was laid over a hump in year one.

Wood acclimated in the house
Material sits in the room it will live in, with the HVAC running, until it stops moving. Skipping this is what opens gaps the first winter.

Layout run the long way
Boards run the length of the house and straight through doorways instead of stopping at them. Fewer transitions, and the rooms read as one floor.

Stairs, landings, and thresholds
Treads, risers, and nosing matched to the floor, and every threshold cut to whatever is on the other side of the door.

From the plans to the last board

Measure and plan
Square footage off the plans or off the rooms, board direction settled, and every transition decided before an order goes in.
- 02
Prep the subfloor
Moisture read, flat spots checked with a straightedge, and whatever underlayment or vapor barrier the method calls for.
- 03
Lay the floor
Racked ahead so grain and lengths stagger properly, then nailed, glued, or floated depending on what is underneath.
- 04
Finish or trim out
Sanded and finished on site, or trimmed straight out if the material came prefinished. Shoe molding and thresholds last.

Before you order
The four that decide what ends up on the quote. Anything else, ask on the estimate — that is what it is for.
Solid or engineered?
Solid is three-quarter-inch wood all the way through and can be sanded four or more times, which is why it is still the answer over a wood subfloor. Engineered is a real wood wear layer over plywood and moves far less with humidity, which is why it is the answer over a slab or a crawl space that runs damp. Both are real wood floors.
Can hardwood go over a concrete slab?
Yes — glued or floated, once the slab passes a moisture test. Nailing into a slab is not an option, so a slab job is usually engineered. We test before quoting, not after.
Can you match the floor already in the house?
Usually. Species, width, and grade we match at the supplier; color we match on site with stain samples laid right against your existing boards. A twenty-year-old floor has ambered, so the match is normally a mix rather than a single stain.
How long does an install take?
A few rooms of prefinished go down in two or three days. Site-finished hardwood is the install plus the sanding and finishing week after it. Both sets of dates are in the written quote before anything starts.
